What’s Involved in the OGUK/OEUK Medical?
The OGUK medical (formerly known as the Oil and Gas UK medical) is a comprehensive health assessment required for individuals working in the oil and gas industry. These medicals are now referred to as OEUK (Offshore Energies UK) medicals, but the purpose remains the same—to ensure offshore workers meet strict health and safety standards.
Given the harsh and remote environments of offshore operations, medical assistance is not always immediately available. As a result, workers must pass an industry-standard health check to confirm they are fit for offshore duty, ensuring both their own safety and that of their colleagues.
What to Expect During Your OGUK/OEUK Medical
The medical begins with a health questionnaire (usually completed in advance) and a consultation with an OEUK-approved doctor. This allows individuals to discuss their medical history, current medications, and any optical or auditory concerns that may affect their certification.
The Examination Includes:
✔ Height, weight, and BMI (Body Mass Index)
✔ Hearing test
✔ Vision test (including color vision)
✔ Blood pressure check
✔ Lung function test
✔ Urine analysis (may include drug and alcohol screening)
Following the consultation, individuals will receive their medical results and certificate on the same day. However, in some cases, further tests (e.g., blood tests, ECG) may be required before certification is issued.
Additional Considerations
Workers assigned to unmanned offshore installations must meet stricter medical criteria due to the increased risks associated with their work environment. Conditions such as heart disease, cardiac arrhythmia, diabetes, or the use of blood-thinning medication may require additional review by a medical advisor before offshore clearance is granted.
The OEUK/OGUK medical certificate is valid for two years, and it’s advisable to keep a record of each medical examination to speed up future renewals.
